What is MM2H

The abbreviation MM2H stands for “Malaysia My Second Home.” It represents a long-stay program for foreigners administered by the Malaysian government.

Under the MM2H program, participants are granted the opportunity to stay in Malaysia for up to 5 years, provided they meet specific requirements. These requirements include making a fixed deposit in a Malaysian bank, presenting evidence of liquid assets, and demonstrating a consistent monthly income from offshore sources.

Our company, Shining Consultant (MM2H) SDN. BHD., is an officially licensed agent for the MM2H program. Based in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, we have a proven track record of successfully assisting numerous individuals in obtaining their MM2H visas.

Why Malaysia

Malaysia is highly recommended as a retirement destination due to its affordable cost of living, safe environment, excellent standard of medical care, and consistent hot and humid climate throughout the year.

For individuals planning a long-term stay in Malaysia, both a passport and a visa are required. A visa serves as proof of intention to travel and enter a foreign country, while a passport serves as documentation allowing an individual to leave their home country.

In Malaysia, a long-stay visa is necessary for extended stays, with the MM2H Visa being a common example. There are three typical visas, including the MM2H Visa, that cater to different purposes and requirements.

Malaysia is widely recognized as one of the most desirable countries for long-term stays due to its favorable climate, diverse population, and affordable cost of living.

Advantages of MM2H

5 Years Residence Permission

Successful applicants under the MM2H program will receive a first five-year visa, which is longer in duration compared to visas offered by many other countries. At the end of the five-year period, the next 5-year visa can be extended.

Initially, the visa is issued for the duration of the main applicant’s valid passport, typically expiring slightly before the passport’s expiration date. Once a new passport is obtained, it is relatively straightforward to apply for the remaining duration of the five-year visa.

It is important to note that the MM2H visa does not lead to Permanent Residency (PR) or citizenship.

Family and Spouse

Dependents, including spouses, children, parents, and parents-in-law over the age of 60, are eligible to obtain a visa attached to the applicant’s MM2H visa.

※Children are considered eligible if they are single and under the age of 35, or if they have a disability (with no age restriction, subject to a doctor’s certification).

※Children’s dependent passes under the MM2H program will no longer be valid once they reach the age of 35. In such cases, the following options may be considered:

① Obtain a student pass (if the individual is a student)

② Obtain a work visa

③ Conclude the stay in Malaysia under the MM2H visa and enter Malaysia with a social visit pass

※The visa will be issued based on the validity date of either the visa or the passport, whichever is shorter. It is advisable to align the validity of the passport with that of the visa. For periods of less than 5 years, the visa will be issued after the passport has been renewed.

Education

Children who are below 18 years of age are eligible to study at qualified educational institutions in Malaysia.

Tax-Free Income

Currently, Malaysia does not impose taxes on overseas income, meaning that any money transferred into the country will be tax-free. However, there are regulations regarding the reporting of large money transfers, so it’s important to comply with these requirements. Banks can assist with this process, but individuals who arrive with large amounts of cash may encounter issues.

Some MM2H visa holders may have their income taxed at the source country where it’s earned. Countries that have double taxation agreements with Malaysia may allow for tax deductions to stop if the taxpayer shows proof of registration for tax in Malaysia, even if no tax is due in this country.

Malaysia does not have an inheritance tax, so assets can be passed on to heirs without incurring Malaysian taxes.

Your Home

Participants of the MM2H program are required to purchase property in Malaysia, with some restrictions depending on the state. Foreigners typically can only purchase properties priced over RM600,000, although this varies by state.
